DEXA Scans at Specialist Radiology Group

About a DEXA Scan

Bone Mineral Density & Body Composition Scans are non-invasive, painless, and performed on an examination table. Please contact our staff for an appointment.

What is a DEXA?

A Bone Mineral Densitometry (BMD/DEXA) scan measures calcium levels in bones and is essential for diagnosing osteoporosis, assessing fracture risk, and evaluating response to osteoporosis treatments. Your scan will last 15-30 mins.

Preparation

Please do not take any calcium or iron tablets 24 hours prior to your examination.

Allow 2 weeks between having a CT Contrast study, Nuclear Medicine/PET scans and/or a Barium Study.

Are there any Risks?

While being scanned, you will receive a very minimal dose of X-ray radiation. The benefits of having a DEXA scan to detect disease outweigh any potential risks associated with this low level of exposure.
