Most MRI scans require no special preparation. However, certain abdominal scans may require fasting for up to 8 hours. If preparation is needed, our team will provide instructions when scheduling your appointment. Please inform the MRI radiographer if you are pregnant or suspect you might be.

Since MRI uses strong magnets, you must inform us if you have any of the following:

  1. Pacemaker
  2. Cochlear implant
  3. Aneurysm clips
  4. Neurostimulator
  5. Metal implants, including surgical staples or clips
  6. Implanted drug infusion device
  7. Any other metallic implants

Our team will ask you a series of safety questions at the time of booking and again before your scan to ensure it can be performed safely.

Preparing for
Your MRI

Please bring your referral letter and Medicare card (if applicable). If you have previous medical images or reports related to your condition, these can help provide a more comprehensive assessment.

What to Expect During Your MRI

Before entering the MRI room, your radiographer will review your safety questionnaire and explain the procedure. You’ll lie on a cushioned table, and in some cases, a specialised device (coil) will be placed around the area being scanned to improve image quality.

MRI machines can be noisy, but you’ll be provided with hearing protection and headphones. If needed, you can communicate with the technician via an intercom, and an emergency button is available for your comfort. The machine is open at both ends, but if you have concerns about claustrophobia, please let our staff know in advance.

How Long Does It Take?

MRI scans typically take between 15 minutes and an hour, depending on the area being examined and the number of images required.

Getting Your MRI Results

Your images will be reviewed by a specialist radiologist, who will prepare a detailed report for your referring doctor. In most cases, results are available on the same day, though complex cases may take a few days for a full assessment. You’ll need to follow up with your doctor to discuss your results and next steps.
